LISTEN

Album art by Benedict Kupstas

Listen: Don’t Get Comfy / Nowhere (2021, Ruination Record Co.)

Pitchfork - The Best Jazz and Experimental Music of 2021 : “The album thrives on the meeting of reservation and vulnerability, and its songs feel as emotional and virtuosic as a power ballad yet are sparse and withholding as a Rembrandt.” -Matthew Strauss

“Carmen Q. Rothwell has created a unique work of art that is relatively experimental in its structure but musically seductive enough to win fans of all stripes on this stunning, elegant closing track and the preceding five songs.” -Chris Ingalls, Popmatters

“Scree bassist Carmen Q. Rothwell released one of the quietest, most patient records of the year, a powerful rumination on grief and coping with being the one left behind. Her voice has the rare quality of being both hushed and strong, each note delivered with pin-like accuracy. It’s the kind of record that you can almost forget is on, in the way that its universe envelops you and becomes your entire reality.” -Michael Cormier, Dear Life Records

Listen: Jasmine on a Night in July by Scree (2023, Ruination Record Co.)

Album art by Aude Nasr

Scree is: Ryan El-Solh, guitar + compositions; Carmen Quill, bass; Jason Burget, drums

Pitchfork - The Best Jazz and Experimental Albums of 2023 : “The Brooklyn trio adds keys, organ, and woodwinds to support the weight of history as received through the work of Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish and the legacy of Arabic music in jazz. The mood is reflective and poignantly unresolved, the story never finished so long as it’s still being told. Scree tell it the way the best history books do: rich in tradition with a flair for melodrama and plenty of time to take in the scenery.” –Anna Gaca

“…the sense of synchronous feeling that makes their debut so enchanting, as if all three are singing the same wordless story in uncanny harmony. Not unlike Tortoise and Labradford in the mid ’90s, Jasmine on a Night in July feels like the proper introduction to a significant new piece of the American instrumental rock landscape, familiar threads woven into fabric that feels novel.” - Grayson Haver Currin, Pitchfork

Listen: Out of Coffee by O’K (2023, self-released)

Album art by Keith Beckley

Ryan El-Solh, guitar; Carmen Quill, bass; Gregg Keplinger, drums

“Alongside discordant harmonies and decaying pop cadence, the trio’s magic is in constructing joyful and colorful play on a sparse canvas. The subversion is never nullifying: love for these standards is palpable and the jocularity of three old friends riffing is necessarily infectious.” -Akshaj Turebylu, Earshot
